"God so loved the World" is the beginning of the "Golden Text" of the Bible in John 3:16. It's message is evident to those who know God and His Word. But can we see it?
Can we see His love in the gift of Jesus? God sent Jesus to bear humanity's guilt in His Son's innocent body (1 John 4:10). As Isaiah prophesied, "the Lord has caused the iniquity of us all to fall on Him...[who] bore the sin of many" (53:6,12). Love undeserved offered by holy justice is the picture of the God we need to know in the Bible. We need to see that.
Can we see His love in the word of God? God sent the Spirit to guide the Apostles into all truth (John 16:13-17). The Bible is a gift of a loving God who wants us to understand and to live in a way that please Him. He is the model parent who will instruct before He expects obedience. And that is the way love has the right to demand obedience. We need to see that too.
Can we see His love in the family of God? Jesus said, "By this [love] will all men know that you are My disciples" (John 13:35). When Christians call, share, plead, pray and ask, it is a manifestation of the presence of God's love. We need to see that too.
Can we see His love in discipline? "God deals with us as children" and "disciplines us for our good" (Hebrews 12:12) because He loves us. With every challenge (Romans 8:35-39) and with every trial (1 Corinthians 10:13). the love He offers in Jesus Christ will uplift and empower us to overcome. We need to see that too.
So can we see His Love? The only appropriate response to His love is our own love. How do we show real love for Him? Jesus said, "if you love Me, you will keep My commandments." Obey God and you will live - really!
